Funeral services are set for United States Army 1st Lt. Michael Runyan of Newark and a native of Ashland, who died in Balad, Iraq, July 21 after he was injured during an insurgent attack.

Calling hours are from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday at the GaREAT complex at 1822 S. Broadway in Geneva, Ohio. A service will follow at 1 p.m. with Dr. Richard Boyer, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Southampton, New York, officiating.

A private family burial will take place in Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville, Ohio.

A 2004 graduate of Ashland High School and 2008 graduate of Xavier University, Runyan is survived by his parents, Jeff and Renee of Newark; sister and brother-in-law Lesley and Matthew Hess of Beavercreek; brother and sister-in-law Alex and Brittany (Ellenfield) of Oceanside, Calif.; fiancee Shaina Cales of Ripley; and other living family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Emmie and Anthony Rebera and Margaret and William Runyan.

Supporters may witness the procession to the cemetery from 9-10 a.m., Sunday along Ohio 20 from Station Avenue in Ashtabula, up to the entrance of the cemetery at Greenlawn.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family in lieu of flowers with donations made out to: The Michael L. Runyan Memorial Fund through the Park National Bank, 1633 W. Main St., Newark, Ohio, 43055. This fund will benefit two separate entities, distinguishable members of the Xavier Army ROTC program and members of Project Odyssey, in association with the Wounded Warrior Project, an outdoor rehabilitative retreat that combines adventure challenges with opportunities for peer support and group processing.

In addition, the family invites anyone who wishes to post a personal memory of Michael on the Facebook memorial group titled, "In Loving Memory of Michael Louis Runyan."

Ducro Funeral Services and Creamatory, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio, 44004, is in charge of arrangements.
