A Mansfield man pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Mansfield Municipal Court to charges of animal cruelty and intoxication after police found a large number of dead animals in his freezer.

Doug Smith, 51, of 349 Springmill St. Apt. 2, was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police found 21 cats and kittens, 16 goldfish and one baby raccoon in his freezer.

Police say Smith called them from a friend's house around 2 p.m. claiming his apartment had been burglarized. When officers arrived, they found the animals in the freezer.

The animals were taken to a veterinarian to determine the cause of death.
